What are Buffers and Vegetative Filter Strips?
Riparian buffers and filter strips are vegetated areas adjacent water resources which help prevent pollutants from reaching streams, rivers, bays, wetlands and lakes. They contain contain native grass, flowers, shrubs, and deep rooted trees along stream banks. This vegetation slows runoff and helps maintain a stable streamflow by trapping sediment and allowing more time for water to soak into the ground in recharge zones. In addition to these, riparian buffers also provide a habitat for wildlife.
